Manassas Park Elementary School (MPES) Learning Courtyards

Manassas Park, Virginia

Taking cues from the site’s ecology and context, the site and architecture are designed as an expression of a forest ecosystem.  This strategic approach recognized the natural assets of the site’s adjacent woodlands and inspired the theme for the school’s three academic ‘houses’ around seasons – with each floor representing a corresponding level of the forest.  Forested courtyards and a tree encircled stormwater amphitheater/outdoor classroom further connect the school to the woodland and serve as extensions of the interior spaces for learning and community within the new school.  MPES has won multiple national design awards – including a 2011 Honor Award for General Design from the American Society of Landscape Architects.
