Three projects highlight the successful work completed as part of the design, management and administration as a member of VMDO Landscape Studio and Siteworks Studio.

The shared values between the design team and Manassas Park Elementary School informed a highly collaborative design process that concluded with both building and site coming together as teaching tools that will inspire students as stewards of their environment. Forested courtyards and a tree encircled stormwater amphitheater/outdoor classroom further connect the school to the woodland and serve as extensions of the interior spaces for learning and community within the new school. Wayland Hall at James Madison University successfully blended contemporary design strategies into JMU’s traditional campus context. In addition to creating appealing spaces for students, site strategies successfully minimized stormwater quantity while improving quality; facilitated alternative transportation; preserved campus open space and provided wildlife habitat through native and adaptive native plantings that do not require irrigation. The University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena involved the design and construction of outdoor gathering and circulation areas, innovative and integrated site stormwater management strategies, as well as stream and forest habitat restoration. The development of the JPJ articulates how stormwater moves through both the man-made portions of the University and the natural landscape, showcasing site systems that would otherwise be marginalized in an attempt at management. Virtually all of the site landscape is a demonstration of the overlay of innovative stormwater management strategies with inhabitable spaces. (Photos by Rich Sisson)
