Site design on the 10.8 acre site was guided by a premise that a student’s academic environment is enhanced through the integration of outdoor learning spaces and opportunities for hands-on learning. They provide avenues to diversify methods in presentation of the curriculum while promoting discovery and a union between the learning community and its surrounding context. The project also offered opportunities to create a place for community gathering and development. Harrisonburg schools are attended by students from 46 countries. The team embraced the challenge of not only creating a great school for the students but also a place that would also become an important landmark for a diverse community as a whole.
